Louisiana race breeding program continues to grow

TUSCALOOSA, AL, January 2022 – Continuing a long tradition of friendships and partnerships in Louisiana quarter horse racing, Carpenter Farms announced in January it will partner with Cannon Farms and LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital for its Louisiana race breeding program.

Cannon Farms, located in Lakeland, specializes in mare care, breeding and foaling along with rescue, training and riding lessons. It is a full-service farm with excellent leadership. Torri Collins-Cannon, a well-known horsewoman in the Louisiana horse community has deep experience, high standards and a can-do approach to everything she does, which matches up well with Carpenter Farms’ goals and standards. In addition to leading the farm, Torri is employed by the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.

“We could not be more pleased to partner with Torri and her family,” said Todd Carpenter, CEO of Carpenter Farms. “Ten minutes or less with Torri and you know you are with someone who knows her business and genuinely cares about the animals. Knowing her as we have, she has proven that know-how over and over with expert care, good communication and excellent decision making.”

Carpenter Farms racing program is built on the legacy of breeding and racing put down by Jerry Carpenter, Todd’s father, a longtime successful breeder who raised racehorses in Alabama and Louisiana for decades. Carpenter’s horses saw success on tracks from South Florida to Louisiana to New Mexico. In past years, the racing focus has been on Louisiana-bred competition.

Jerry Carpenter attributes much of his success to longtime partnerships and friendships in the state. “If you asked my father he would tell you the success of the race breeding program is built on relationships with people like Purvis Lege and others who make up this community,” Todd Carpenter said. “When Purvis retired, my dad started to reduce the size of his operation also. Our partnership with Torri positions us to build on good foundations put down by my dad, Purvis and others and pick up the pace again.”

Carpenter Farms is a fifth-generation breeding and training operation based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with affiliates in Natchez, Miss., Kentucky and Florida. Home of the Lifetime Ranch Horse and Lifetime Trail Horse, we specialize in breeding and development of superior horses in competitive western disciplines, racing, trail, adventure and personal horses.
